Emergency Tsunami Reconstruction Project aided by World Bank – 2009 :
Several houses in the coastal area were damaged by December 2004 tsunami. People were sheltered in churches, community halls, schools, marriage halls, etc. A number of houses were rebuild by the Central, State Governments and NGOs. However, a large number of people continued to live in damaged houses or houses which they repaired with palm or coconut leaves. So the Government decided to build houses for them. Initially, contractors were appointed for the construction, but the quality could not be assured. Government decided to do the construction of house under third party facilitator NGOs Chevaliar Roche Society was appointed as the third party facilitator for Ramnathpuram District.
Our Facilitation Role Includes:
Motivate beneficiaries to participate in the project, organize habitation approval by gramasabha, provide beneficiaries support in selecting the design of house, assist them in opening bank account, provide technical support, supervise quality of materials, assist beneficiaries in getting electricity connection, house number, insurance, etc. Reporting and documentation. A total of 2642 houses are allocated for our facilitation. The houses are to be completed in 30 months. In addition to the contractor and his staff, CRS has 18 staff including community mobilizers and technical staff involved in the project.
Housing Project aided by Habitat Humanity of India:
In 2009 HHI selected Chevaliar Roche Society for implementation of its housing loan project funds areas of Thoothukudi district. Under the project funds Rs 25000 wad given as loan for 100 new houses and repair and renovation of 100 houses. The houses were of 325 sq. ft. As implementing agency, we were involved in selection of beneficiaries, ensuring proper construction, and completion in scheduled time frame. Loans of Rs 5000 were also allocated for construction of toilets, laying of water pipeline, and electric connection to 200 families. The beneficiaries were able to claim a grant of Rs 55000 under the indira Awas Yojna from the Panchayat. On successful completion of the initial project HHI allocated further loans for 170 new houses which are under construction.
