  WOMEN EMPOWERNMENT

Training Programme

At CRS we believe skill enhancement is an important ingredient of empowerment, From its inception we have therefore been giving much importance to the training of youth and members of SHGs.  There are two types of training programmes conducted by Chevaliar Roche Society.

a) Vocational Training Programmes (VTP)

These are courses organized at our main centre in Thoothukudi and at various sub-centres.  The courses are for a period from 3 months to one year and include:

  • Garment Designing
  • Nursing Assistant
  • Embroidery and Stone work
  • Beautician
  • Driving
  • Heavy Equipment Operation
  • AC mechanic
  • Electrical and wiring
  • Computerized account
  • TV mechanic
  • Cellphone repair
  • Welding
  • Shipping and Logistics
  • Lab Technician
  • Marine Mechanics
  • Catering Technology

Every year about 600 to 750 youth participate in these programmes.  Eligible candidates get scholarship from the Social Welfare Board of the Government of India and we are happy to note most of them get placement soon after the training.

b) Livelihood Training Programme (LTP)

Skill enhancement for Alternative Livelihood is an important aspect of our work with the Self Help Groups.  Fishing and related activities are the main work of both men and women in the coastal area.  At present there are more people than the coast can contain.  This along with the depletion of catch and intermittent disasters lead to unemployment and poverty in the shores.  In order to tide over the lean days and encourage women in income generation activities we conduct LTP in association with a number of government departments, corporate, and other NGOs in the region.  SHG members are given training in garment design, dry flower production , jute bag production, shell jewelry, fish processing, palm craft, crab fattening, stitching and needle works, organic manure production, cell phone repair, petty trading, mushroom cultivation, coir rope making etc.,

Nehru Yuvak Kendra

Nehru Yuvak Kendra has been a major partner of CRS in our youth development initiatives. From 1996 our Youth Development Centre has been supported by NYK.  Rural Information Technology promotion has been an important project.  As a part of the project several youth have been provided free computer education.

Women Trafficking-Watch Dog Project

2000-2008 in association with Tamil Nadu voluntary Health Association we organized many health programmes.  During the last year we were a member of District Facilitation Centre for HIV.  Five NGOs of Thoothukudi district worked under our guidance.  Our work involved monitoring the NGOs and providing Orientation training and Refreshment Training to HIV + people.  SHG leaders, Board of Members and Watch Dog committee meetings at panchayats of Thoothukudi block, Tiruchendur block and Pudur block.  At panchayat level we conducted meeting and selected the Watch Dog committee members and formed them as Village supervision Committee.  We provided them the training about safety of children and prevention of human smuggling.  Government officials and panchayat presidents appreciate our service as it is a helpful project to the common people.  Through this project many youth have joined in the village supervision committee voluntarily.

Family Conuseling  Centre :

With the objective of redressing the matrimonial disputers among the couples particularly among the rural community, Family Counseling Centre is being run by our organization at Kovilpatti in Thoothukudi District. It is facilitated by 2 Couples – one male and one female, one office assistant and one typist. During the reporting year, about 240 couples have been counseled among which 142  have been reunited and  98 were referred for legal and follow up activities. The project is aided by Central Social Welfare Board, Government of India.

Women Empowerment Project :

Industries with Head Office in London has been functioning in Thoothukudi for  several  years. As an expression of its commitment to Community Development of Rural and Coastal communities. They have been working along with voluntary organizations in provision of basic infrastructure, education, health care, and women  uploftment. Whereas Sterlite has selected  Chevaliar Roche Society as a mother NGO in Thoothukudi and 5 other NGOs (Chitharanjan Doss Organization for women, Vanavil Society, Able Foundation, UGASEVA, Justice) to carry out its activities. One of the main aim of Sterlite Copper industries is to be train women from the surrounding areas and to form them into Self Help Groups and make them as entrepreneurs. 1066 SHGs are promoted under this project by 6 NGOs with 15014 membership and a total saving of Rs. 43232160.
